Kenya on the Horizon

FFC is happy to announce that our next aquaponics farm is officially on the docket and our farm team is raring to go. The opportunity to partner with Empowering Lives International (ELI) – an organization that is doing extensive work in Tanzania, DR Congo, and Kenya – brings us back to Kenya this coming October/November. While there we will develop our 2nd aquaponics farm in Kenya (FFC’s 8th overall), as well as check in on the nearby farm we established at Open Arms Village last year.

At one time Kenya was one of the most economically robust countries in Africa, but after a difficult election in 2007, and a major drought in 2009, the Kenyan economy become more like its poorer neighbors, Ethiopia and Chad. As we have seen in so many other parts of the world, impoverishment can be a breeding ground for child trafficking. Today more than 20,000 children are trafficked in Kenya each year. Since 1995 ELI has been partnering with Kenyan nationals, U.S. staff and volunteers helping thousands of suffering people find a pathway to empowerment. FFC is very excited to begin our relationship with ELI by helping them give sustainable help to the local people through aquaponics farming.

This next farm will be utilized to support their two children’s homes for orphans, as well as becoming a valuable tool for their two vocational training centers. As the old adage goes: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
