An exciting next chapter!

A pivotal moment

Last Friday, Fly Fishing Collaborative (FFC) celebrated its 2nd Annual Fundraising Banquet at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, Oregon. It proved to be a pivotal moment for the future of FFC. In front of a completely packed house, FFC founder Bucky Buchstaber, gave an emotional report about each of last year’s safe home farm projects. And, he announced the locations for FFC’s 2017 new Aquaponics Farms that will be established in Kenya, Africa and Northern Thailand, which is set to break ground in one week. We could not be more excited to provide these sustainable resources to kids in need and to document for you the opportunities being provided to each child.

Furthermore, during Bucky’s report to the audience, he showed an inspiring video produced by photographer Aaron Bickford of Drifting Perspective and edited by freelance cinematographer Dominic Laing. This two minute video beautifully encapsulates the great changes that result from your actionable support and we hope you’ll enjoy watching it as we lead into the next chapter of FFC.

An exciting next chapter!

FFC is proud to announce that in June of this year that we will officially launch our new local justice initiative! Since FFC’s early establishment, we have always been burdened by human trafficking in the United States; especially in our home city of Portland, Oregon. And the time to do something about it is now.

Did you know?

  • In 2016, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children estimated that 1 in 6 endangered runaways reported to them were likely sex trafficking victims.
  • According to a study done by Portland State University researchers, 95% of trafficking victims in Oregon come from the foster care system.
  • The average age of child trafficking victims in the U.S. is 13.

Fly Fishing Collaborative is proud to come alongside of Portland’s Department of Human Services, and Portland’s Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC) as well as Door to Grace (a local non-profit safe home) and to support them by providing full service fly fishing trips and outdoor recreation adventures to the vulnerable kids and the victims of human trafficking. We are confident these experiences will provide great mentorship, healing, and empowerment through amazing outdoor activities.

Furthermore, FFC will partner with a new local nut-butter company called Ground Up Nut Butters. Ground Up is a for-profit business intent on training disadvantaged women in the Greater Portland area. They not only hire, but provide each person with marketable skills through the production and sales of their delicious & nutritious nut butters. They take a holistic approach to empowerment, offering personal development services, and mentorship during the workday. Their goal is for women to engage in creative self-expression with the hope of gaining confidence and realizing their full potential. FFC will help the financial needs of the job-skill coaches working with women wanting to escape trafficking and gaining healthy and sustainable job skills that will take them on into the workforce.
