Phase 2 in Gales Point, Belize begins October 3rd
Over the past two decades the community of Gales Point, Belize has faced a rapid decline in overall health and a significant increase in diabetes, theft, vandalism, and the exploitation and abuse of women and children. In collaboration with the Gales Point Village Council, and with the help of many eager villagers, this past June the FFC team renovated space in the Gales Point Community Center to serve as the permanent living quarters for the Gales Point Farm Manager. We're dedicated to our work towards sustainable change with the village and look forward to better days for our Belizean friends. With the necessary groundwork in place it is now time to build them a farm! The 1,000 square foot aquaponic greenhouse will provide employment opportunities and a much needed healthy food source for the village.
That said, we're thrilled to announce that Phase 2 of our project in Gales Point, Belize begins October 3rd.
Although this trip will mark the completion of our two phase plan in Gales Point, our work with the village to create an incredible pathway of hope and healing has just begun. The lagoon surrounding Gales Point boasts a secluded tarpon fishery, and we see incredible potential for livelihood through tourism in the village. With the vast majority of fisheries across the globe operating at or close to maximum sustainable yield, Gales Point remains one of the few locations on the planet offering anglers a unique fishing experience in such an unpressured environment. Furthermore, the rich African heritage in the village carries many cherished traditions. Storytelling, culinary arts, and a unique ceremonial drum rhythm called “Sambai” name just a few.
The beauty and culture of Gales Point deserves to be seen and preserved, and they want to share it with you! In the months and years ahead we plan to host numerous group visits to Gales Point, allowing many more to experience this meaningful work first hand. Stay tuned for more information on hosted trips.
To continue this incredible work, we'd like to invite you to join FFC's Sustainable Partnership Program starting at just $10/month.
